Overview:
Each year this nine-day 3 400-kilometre journey takes the train from the savannahs of the Highveld to the Atlantic Ocean in the west. The Pride of Africa departs from Pretoria for Kimberley, before it traverses the stark vistas of the arid Northern Cape into Namibia at Ariamsvlei. The train continues across the Kalahari Desert to Namibia’s capital, Windhoek –  Guests then fly to the world-famous Sossusvlei. After a night’s stay with desert drives and a bush dinner, guests rejoin the train in Windhoek and continue overnight to Tsumeb. A night is spent at the Mokuti Game Lodge before the journey continues on to Swakopmund – an unforgettable end to a remarkable journey.

Day to Day Itinerary:

Day 1

Depart from Rovos Rail Station in Pretoria at 15h00. Dinner is served as the train travels southwest for Kimberley.

Day 2

Arrive in Kimberley at 09h45 and enjoy a tour of the Big Hole and Diamond Mine Museum, centre of one of the world’s most famous diamond rushes where there is an opportunity to visit the Big Hole and savour the 1870s atmosphere of the mine museum and village.  Depart for Upington as lunch is served.

 

Day 3

Disembark at 08h00 for a two-hour walking tour of Upington. During lunch the train arrives in Nakop for border formalities. Dinner and overnight on the train.

 

Day 4

Disembark the train at 08h00 for a visit to the spectacular Fish River Canyon, second in size to the Grand Canyon and truly a spectacular sight.
Enjoy a walking tour of Keetmanshoop in the afternoon. The train departs for Namibia’s capital city at 17h00.

 

Day 5

Windhoek city tour at 09h00. Windhoek is a lively, cosmopolitan city with a strong German flavour – for a short city tour. Depart at 11h00 in a light aircraft for a one-hour scenic flight to Sossusvlei, a stunning pan in the Namib Desert surrounded by enormous red sand dunes.. Enjoy lunch, a desert drive, a bush dinner and overnight.

 

Day 6

At 06h00, enjoy an excursion with breakfast in the desert.
Depart Sossusvlei at 12h00 for the flight Windhoek and rejoin the train.

 

Day 7

After breakfast, arrive in Tsumeb and transfer to Mokuti Lodge and the Etosha National Park.
Enjoy lunch, an afternoon game drive and overnight.

 

Day 8

Enjoy an early morning game drive in the Etosha National Park. Return to the train for lunch and depart Tsumeb.

 

Day 9

Arrive at journey’s end in Swakopmund, a perfectly preserved 19th-century German Hansa town set between the dunes of the Namib desert and the roaring Atlantic Ocean, at 12h00.

 

This itinerary is also available in reverse. Depart Swapkomund at 1000 hours on Day 1, arriving into Pretoria on Day 9 at 1200 hours. Date of travel: 6th May 2012
