Rovos Rail - Pride of Africa
The Most Luxurious Train In the World
Established: 1989 (Founded by Rohan Vos)
Route: Cape Town to Dar es Salaam, and multiple routes across Southern Africa
Journey Duration: 48 hours to 16 nights
The Story
Born in 1985 when engineer Rohan Vos bought derelict coaches at auction and a 1938 locomotive from a scrapyard, Rovos Rail launched its first commercial departure on 29 April 1989 with just four passengers. Today it is widely acclaimed as the most luxurious train on Earth - a rolling palace of restored vintage coaches with a maximum of 72 guests, the largest on-train private suites in the world, and routes spanning up to 3,500 miles across Southern and East Africa.
✦ Behind the Scenes: Vos bans phones, laptops, and televisions from all communal spaces. Guests dress for dinner; champagne is poured at sunset. Departures begin from the train's own private station in Pretoria - complete with a railway museum - so the journey begins well before the wheels turn.
Train Highlights
- Royal Suite: At half a carriage in size, the largest private suite on any train in the world - with a Victorian bathtub.
- Edwardian Dining: Four-course dinners on crisp linen, gleaming silver, and South Africa's finest wines. Jacket and tie required.
- Open-Air Observation Car: A rear balcony carriage - a special dispensation from South African Railways - for unobstructed views of the African wild.
- Epic Distances: Cape Town to Dar es Salaam: 3,500 miles across four countries over 16 nights.

Venice Simplon-Orient-Express
The World's Most Famous Train - 140 Years of Glamour
Established: 1883 (Orient Express); 1982 (VSOE revived by James Sherwood)
Route: London/Paris to Venice, Istanbul, Vienna, Prague, Budapest, and beyond
Journey Duration: One night (Paris-Venice) to five nights (Paris-Istanbul)
The Story
The Orient Express first departed Paris on 4 October 1883, carrying diplomats, aristocrats, and spies between Western Europe and the Ottoman Empire for a century. Its 1920s and 1930s carriages inspired Agatha Christie's most famous mystery and hosted Marlene Dietrich, Lawrence of Arabia, and countless royals. When the service declined, American businessman James Sherwood quietly bought the original carriages at auction and revived the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express in 1982 - those very same Art Deco coaches still running today
✦ Behind the Scenes: No two carriages are alike - each has its own Art Deco character and provenance. While guests dine, stewards silently transform cabins into sleeping quarters and leave a personalised card. Small ritual; lasting memory.
Train Highlights
- Original Art Deco Carriages: 1920s and 1930s marquetry, lacquer, and inlay work - no two carriages are alike, every detail original.
- Paris-Istanbul Route: Five nights, twice yearly - the most legendary rail route in history, unchanged in over a century.
- Grand Suites: Six suites named for the train's great cities: private drawing room, double bed, en-suite bathroom.
- Bar Car 3674: A pianist plays nightly in this Art Deco lounge car as cocktails flow and Europe drifts past the windows.

India's Royal Train - A Journey Through the Land of Maharajas

Established: 26 January 1982 (Republic Day; RTDC & Indian Railways)
Route: New Delhi → Jaipur → Ranthambhore → Udaipur → Jaisalmer → Jodhpur → Agra
Journey Duration: 7 nights / 8 days; departing every Wednesday, September to April
The Story
Launched on Republic Day 1982, the Palace on Wheels recreated the railway experience of India's ruling elite - its 14 coaches modelled on the private carriages of maharajas and viceroys, each named for a former royal state of Rajasthan. Ranked #1 in Condé Nast Traveler's 2024 Readers' Choice Awards, it remains India's most celebrated luxury train: a seamless week-long journey through the subcontinent's most extraordinary royal cities.
✦ Behind the Scenes: Every carriage has its own dedicated Khidmatgar (personal butler). At each destination, dancers, musicians, and local guides stage a full ceremonial welcome - the kind of arrival normally reserved for heads of state.

- Ranthambhore Safari: An exclusive jeep safari through one of India's premier tiger reserves, woven into the itinerary.

The Ghan
Australia's Legendary Trans-Continental Adventure
Established: 1929 (Original service); 2004 (Full Adelaide–Darwin route opened)
Route: Adelaide to Darwin (or reverse), 2,979 km through Australia's Red Centre
Journey Duration: 53 hours (full journey); options from 24 hours to 3 nights
The Story
Named for the Afghan cameleers who opened Australia's outback in the 19th century, The Ghan first ran Adelaide to Alice Springs in 1929 - on a line so flood-prone that passengers sometimes helped repair the tracks. A new standard-gauge line in 1980 fixed the chronic delays, and the AUD 1.3 billion extension to Darwin completed in 2004 finally fulfilled a vision 126 years in the making. Today it is Australia's most celebrated rail journey, crossing six climate zones over 2,979 kilometres.
✦ Behind the Scenes: At full capacity The Ghan stretches over half a mile - so long it boards from two platforms simultaneously before being joined. In 2026, two new ultra-luxurious suites (Australis and Aurora) debut, each with private bars and Champagne Bollinger.
Train Highlights
- Platinum Class: Tasmanian Myrtle-panelled cabins with private en-suite, panoramic windows, and exclusive dining.
- Off-Train Excursions: Helicopter rides over the MacDonnell Ranges, gorge cruises through Nitmiluk, and encounters with Indigenous Jawoyn culture.
- Outback Sunrise: The train pauses at Marla before dawn - passengers step onto red desert soil to watch one of Earth's most extraordinary sunrises.
- Culinary Journey: The Queen Adelaide Restaurant serves regionally inspired dishes: kangaroo loin, barramundi ceviche, Barossa Valley wine.

Rocky Mountaineer
No Night Trains - Just Pure Mountain Magic
Established: 1990 (Privatised from VIA Rail; first departure 27 May 1990)
Route: Vancouver to Banff or Jasper; also US Southwest routes
Journey Duration: 2–3 days (all-daylight travel; overnight hotel stays en route)
The Story
The Rocky Mountaineer traces its roots to the 1885 Canadian Pacific Railway, whose president William Van Horne declared: 'If we can't export the scenery, we'll have to import the tourists.' Privatised in 1990 and transformed by the launch of glass-dome GoldLeaf carriages in 1995, it has since won the World Travel Award for World's Leading Travel Experience by Train eight times. Its defining rule: the train never travels at night, so passengers never miss a single moment of the Rockies.
✦ Behind the Scenes: The train slows to 'Kodak Speed' at key viewpoints, and at the 1909 Spiral Tunnels passengers watch the locomotive disappear into the mountain while the rear carriages are still outside. Every guest receives the Mile Post newspaper - a mile-by-mile route guide so nothing passes unnoticed.
Train Highlights
- GoldLeaf Service: Bi-level glass-dome carriages: 360-degree mountain views on the upper deck, full à la carte dining below.
- Spiral Tunnels: An 1909 engineering marvel where the train loops inside a mountain to conquer Kicking Horse Pass.
- Wildlife: Bears, moose, eagles, bighorn sheep - onboard hosts announce every sighting as the train slows.
- Daylight Only: The Rocky Mountaineer never travels at night. Not once. Because the scenery is the whole point.

Belmond Royal Scotsman
A Country House on Wheels Through Scotland's Wild Heart
Established: 1985 (Acquired by Belmond in 2005)
Route: Round-trips from Edinburgh into the Scottish Highlands
Journey Duration: 2 to 7 nights; season April to October
The Story
Launched in 1985 and designed to travel slowly - slow enough to absorb every loch and glen - the Royal Scotsman was always a hotel on wheels first and a train second. Belmond took over in 2005, adding the Bamford Haybarn Spa car and the bespoke experiential programming that define it today. With just 36 guests maximum, it remains one of the most intimate luxury trains in the world - guests are piped aboard at Edinburgh Waverley by a Highland bagpiper, and in 2011 it became the first Orient Express train ever to host a wedding.
✦ Behind the Scenes: The Royal Scotsman never travels at night - it stables in quiet sidings so guests sleep in silence. The staff-to-guest ratio is among the highest of any luxury train, and at journey's end complimentary transfers await directly from the platform.
Train Highlights
- Grand Suite: A private drawing room, sofa, and ensuite - described as the finest cabin on any train in the world.
- Bamford Haybarn Spa: Two onboard treatment rooms offering all-natural Bamford therapies as Highland views glide past.
- Exclusive Access: Private estates, distilleries, and castles across Scotland - places closed to the general public.
- Single Malt Ritual: After dinner, a local Highlander pours rare malts in the observation car - one of the great whisky experiences in travel.

Belmond Hiram Bingham
The Legendary Train to the Lost City of the Incas
Established: 1999; acquired by LVMH/Belmond 2019
Route: Poroy (Cusco) through the Sacred Valley to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu gateway)
Journey Duration: Full day return - outbound morning, return evening; entirely all-inclusive
The Story
Named for Hiram Bingham III - the American explorer who arrived at Machu Picchu in 1911 guided by local villagers - this 1920s Pullman-style train was launched in 1999 with carriages fitted by the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits, the same company behind the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. There is only one luxury train to Machu Picchu, and this is it. LVMH acquired Belmond for $3.2 billion in 2019, adding further lustre to what was already one of the world's great short rail journeys.
✦ Behind the Scenes: A platform performance of traditional Peruvian dance and live music greets guests at Poroy before departure. The return leg includes afternoon tea at the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge - the only hotel at Machu Picchu's entrance, where the citadel is visible from every window.
Train Highlights
- 1920s Pullman Elegance: Polished wood, brass, and Art Deco detail - with vivid Peruvian colours rooting the experience firmly in the Andes..
- Sacred Valley Views: Terraced mountainsides, snowcapped peaks, and the turquoise Urubamba River - among the most dramatic rail panoramas on Earth.
- Live Music & Dance: A traditional Peruvian band and folk dancers perform throughout. The atmosphere is closer to a celebration than a train ride.
- Machu Picchu Access: Guaranteed guided tour of the citadel plus priority access to the Sanctuary Lodge for afternoon tea.

The New Frontier

Qinghai - Tibet Railway
The Heavenly Road - Earth's Highest Railway
Established: 2006 (Golmud–Lhasa section opened 1 July 2006)
Route: Xining to Lhasa, Tibet - 1,956 km across the world's highest plateau
Journey Duration: 21-22 hours (Xining to Lhasa); up to 48+ hours from Beijing or Shanghai
The Story
First proposed in the 1950s and long declared impossible, the Golmud–Lhasa section required 100,000 workers to overcome permafrost, extreme altitude, earthquake zones, and a fragile ecosystem. Not a single worker died from altitude sickness - credited to 600 medical staff stationed along the line. It opened on 1 July 2006 and now holds nine world records, including the world's highest railway (crossing Tanggula Pass at 5,072m - higher than any peak in the Alps) and the longest track built on permafrost.
✦ Behind the Scenes: Every carriage is pressurised with a dual oxygen system: levels rise automatically above 3,000m, with individual mask outlets beneath every seat. A doctor travels on each departure. Hundreds of kilometres of wildlife fencing protect the yak, antelope, and gazelle that roam alongside the track.
Train Highlights
- Tanggula Pass: At 5,072 metres, the world's highest railway pass - a landscape closer to the heavens than most mountaineers ever reach.
- Nine World Records: Highest station, longest permafrost railway, longest plateau tunnel, longest plateau bridge (11.7 km), and more.
- Qinghai Lake: China's largest saltwater lake - a vast shimmering expanse ringed by Tibetan and Mongolian nomadic communities.
- Arrival in Lhasa: The Potala Palace materialising from the plateau at 3,650 metres: one of the most spiritual arrivals in global travel.

Every great luxury train is, at its heart, an argument for slowing down. In a world defined by speed and efficiency, these eight trains ask us to do the opposite: to take the long way, to look out the window, to dress for dinner, and to arrive changed. They are not transport. They are destinations - rolling, breathing, living destinations - and they exist in a category entirely their own.
