Journeys on
Caledonian Sleeper
Introduction / History
Taking the Caledonian Sleeper train
to Scotland is the most romantic and environmentally friendly way of travelling
from London to Fort William. This service links London Euston, North West
England and over 40 locations in Scotland. You leave London in the evening and
wake up in the middle of the wild, remote West Highlands next morning, without
the hassle of airports and flights.
Scotrail’s Caledonian Sleeper service
operates six nights a week (Sunday to Friday). It gives you the chance to
travel overnight, waking up refreshed the next morning at your destination. The
beauty of the stunning countryside is an added bonus. This 11-hour journey
winds back the years taking you through breathtaking wilderness scenery. For
most of the journey, the train is never away from a valley-hugging road.
The train, the longest in the UK, is
actually bound to 3 destinations – West Highlands & Fort William, Perth,
Aviemore & Inverness and Dundee & Aberdeen. The train splits up into 3
portions at a service stop in Edinburgh. Cabin attendants are at hand to help
you board the right coach.
Accommodation
The Caledonian Sleeper, while not luxurious, is a very comfortable journey through the length of Great Britain. The
interiors are warm and welcoming and with crisp white
sheets in the cabins. All cabins are air-conditioned. Separate male and female toilets are at the
end of each coach.
The train offers 3 types of
accommodation:
Single berths
The single berths are first class and
accommodate one person. These private,
peaceful cabins are quite popular with
business travelers. Single berth cabins can order a limited selection of light
snacks and drinks from room service. A
continental or hot breakfast is served in the cabin each morning. Single berth
cabin facilities include:
- a comfortable duvet
- bedside lighting, controlled from
your bed at the touch of a button
- wash basin and soft hand towel
- shaver point
- a complimentary toilet pack
Twin berths
The twin berth cabins are popular
with leisure travellers and are suited for 2 people travelling together. Tea or
coffee and shortbread is served to the cabin in the morning. A continental breakfast
is also available for a small supplement, which can be ordered at the time of
boarding the train.
Twin berth cabin facilities include:

Seated sleeper
The seated sleepers are reclining
seats, comfortable for an overnight journey. The seats have individual reading
lights, foot-rests and tray tables in an air-conditioned environment. A buffet
service is provided to all seated sleeper guests (extra cost)
Dining / Lounge
One of the highlights on board the Caledonian
Sleeper is its lounge car with sofas and designer chairs to create a warm and
friendly atmosphere for fellow passengers to meet each other. The Lounge Car
has a pleasant atmosphere where you can stretch your legs before bed, enjoy a
light snack, hot or cold drink or even a nightcap. You can enjoy local Scottish
food – haggis, tatties and neeps, wine and whiskey in the lounge car (extra
cost).
