The TranzAlpine Train is rated as one of the world’s great scenic railway journeys! The train travels between Christchurch and Greymouth, from one coast of New Zealand’s South Island to the other. From your carriage you will see the fields of the Canterbury Plains and farmland, followed by the spectacular gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River. Your train then climbs into the Southern Alps before descending through lush beech rain forest to the West Coast town of Greymouth – a great base for visits to Punakaiki and the popular glaciers. This is a fantastic trip that lives up to its reputation as one’s of the world’s most scenic train journeys. It is 223.8 kilometres long and takes just four and a half hours. There are 19 tunnels, and 4 viaducts, the highest being the Staircase standing at 73 metres.
The Tranz Alpine train includes a fully licensed café car and professional Train Managers who provide informative commentary to ensure a totally unique experience. The cafe bar serves snacks, tea & coffee, wine, beer, spirits and light microwavable meals at a reasonable price. It also includes an open air viewing carriage where all your senses are awakened with the clean, fresh, mountain air.
