The trip of a lifetime - truly one of the world’s great scenic train trips through the dramatic contrast of dry beech forests and tussock land on one side of the Alps and lush green landscapes on the other. From Christchurch, cross the patchwork farmland of the Canterbury plains, follow the Waimakariri river, climbing into alpine scenery on a series of spectacular viaducts. Then, after stopping at Arthur's Pass, emerge from the long Otira Tunnel and descend through sub tropical rain forest past beautiful Lake Brunner and on to Greymouth.

The TranzAlpine train travels daily until the May 10th, 2025, when it will reduce to four-day a week service (Monday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday). The TranzAlpine will return to 7-day service from July 11, 2025.

  • Bookable any time before the train departs (subject to seat availability)

  • 50% refundable up to 24 hours before travel
  • Unlimited date changes up to 24 hours before travel (a fare upgrade might be required and amended travel must be within 6 months of the original travel date)
  • Free stopovers (stop off and visit towns and places of interest en-route)
  • Bookable any time before the train departs (subject to fare availability)
